Wondering how to fill your downtime in Arugam Bay between surf sessions? While yoga, café hopping, great food, hanging with friends, and the nightlife are all solid go-tos, there’s a whole world beyond the town itself. Sri Lanka is packed with incredible culture, stunning nature, and local traditions that are truly one of a kind.

Okanda & Kudumbigala

Hop on a tuk-tuk and head to Okanda, a historic Tamil Hindu temple with deep cultural roots. Every August, nearly 25,000 Hindu pilgrims from across Sri Lanka journey to this sacred site. Not far away lies Kudumbigala Monastery, dating all the way back to 246 BC. On this tour, you'll dive into the fascinating histories of both landmarks, with a stop at the Panama Crocodile Tank along the way. Snacks, water, and fresh king coconut are included to keep you refreshed.

Lagoon Safari

Just 4 kilometers from Arugam Bay, Pottuvil Lagoon stretches over 200 acres, framed by views of Whiskey Point and Pottuvil Point. At its heart lies a tiny, picturesque island. The lagoon is encircled by dense mangrove forests, teeming with wildlife. On this two-hour canoe tour, you'll drift through serene waters and discover a thriving ecosystem up close—spot marine life like fish, prawns, and crabs; watch for sea eagles, kingfishers, pelicans, herons, jacanas, coots, and darters overhead; catch both monkey species in the treetops; and keep your eyes peeled for elephants roaming the island or jungle, crocodiles basking on the shores or lurking among the mangrove roots, and water monitors gliding along the banks.

Village Bicycle tour

Pottuvil and Arugam Bay are steeped in rich cultural heritage. On this unique experience, you'll have the chance to learn about the community's traditions, hear their stories, and discover their hopes and plans for the future. To top it off, you'll enjoy a delicious lunch hosted by a local family—a truly authentic and memorable way to connect with the heart of Sri Lanka.

Night Camp on Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is a bustling town with a mix of party spots and laid-back hangouts tucked off the main street. The party scene kicks off after 9:00 PM and often rolls right through until sunrise. Highlights include the Wednesday night parties at Ocean Sky (just 100 meters from our surf camp), Saturday nights at Mambo, and Friday night festivities at Whisky Point.

With much of Sri Lanka’s population following Buddhism, the full moon holds special significance—and in Arugam Bay, it’s celebrated with beachside bonfires and BBQs. On quieter nights, the more relaxed venues offer drinks, live music, and the occasional surf movie or sports match on TV or projector. Getting back to your accommodation is a breeze—either on foot or by hailing one of the many tuk-tuks around town. And of course, we can arrange our own surf camp tuk-tuk for you at the best price.
